Who We Are
The Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program is an organization dedicated to increasing and enhancing pro bono legal services to low-income people in Dallas through the recruitment, training, and support of volunteer attorneys.
What We Do
Any person who wants to receive free legal help from the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program must apply for assistance and meet our eligibility guidelines. People can apply for free legal help at any of the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program Neighborhood Legal Clinics.
Volunteer Attorney Clinic Duties
Attorneys conduct fact gathering interviews, record case information and provide advice to applicants. Prior to the interviews, attorneys will have an opportunity to review the application and discuss the matter with DVAP staff or other attorneys volunteering. Attorney interviews are suggested to be about 15 minutes. Each application contains a section for attorney notes, including any advice given. Please let DVAP staff know of any impending deadlines. You may be asked to review a decree, contract, deed or lease and provide relevant advice. Please do not keep original documents but do check with DVAP staff to see if they are able to make copies of the documents. Volunteering at a clinic does not obligate a volunteer attorney to take a case.
Non-Attorney Volunteer Clinic Duties
Non-attorney volunteers prescreen applicants for eligibility and assist applicants in completing the application. Once all applicants have completed an application and have been screened for eligibility, all non-attorney volunteers are free to leave. Law Student volunteers are welcome to stay and participate during the interview process.
